ICL Speakers Series 2025 – Exploring the Link Between Built Environments and Health
Wednesday, 23 July 2025 | ICL Education Centre

On Wednesday, 23 July 2025, ICL Education Group hosted the fourth session of the ICL Speakers Series 2025, featuring a compelling talk by Dr Meenal Rai, Head of Interdisciplinary Health Studies and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Health & Environmental Sciences, Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

Dr Rai presented on the topic “Interrelationships of Built Environments and Health”, drawing attention to the critical role our physical surroundings play in shaping public health outcomes.

The session covered a range of insightful themes including:

🔹 Determinants of a healthy built environment

🔹 Urban form and its influence on individual and community health

🔹 The relationship between human health and the built environment in the New Zealand context

🔹 Global and local examples of how infrastructure, planning, and design impact wellbeing

With a strong background in culturally responsive research and a passion for supporting migrant and ethnic communities, Dr Rai offered both practical insights and theoretical frameworks that resonated deeply with students and staff alike.

The event was well-attended by members of the ICL academic team, including Paula Ray, Academic Director, who, along with other faculty, engaged in meaningful dialogue following the presentation. The interactive Q&A session provided an opportunity for students to explore the real-world relevance of these issues and reflect on how the spaces we live and work in affect our health behaviours and lifestyles.

The session concluded with light refreshments, encouraging further conversation and connection among attendees.

We extend our sincere thanks to Dr Meenal Rai for her inspiring contribution, and to all participants for making this session a great success.
