Thursday, 28 August 2025 | ICL Education Centre

On Thursday, 28 August 2025, ICL Graduate Business School hosted the second session of the ICL Future Tech – Talk Series, welcoming students, staff, and special guests to an engaging and informative presentation by Aatisha Gupta, ISTQB-certified Test Analyst at KiwiRail.

Her talk, “Unveiling the Role of a Software Tester,” provided attendees with an in-depth look at one of the most important roles in the technology industry. Drawing from her professional journey, Aatisha spoke about the transition from academics to practical work, offering advice on how students can effectively prepare for the realities of industry life. She also highlighted the skills that are most in demand in the current job market and explained how mastering these competencies can create meaningful career opportunities.

The session explored the tools most commonly used by testers, including JIRA, Selenium, and Postman, and examined the differences between manual and automation testing—showing how both approaches contribute to ensuring software quality. Aatisha also painted a picture of what a typical day in the life of a software tester looks like, helping students understand the variety and scope of responsibilities the role entails. Attendees gained practical knowledge of common testing activities as well as how test plans and test exit reports are developed, with examples provided to illustrate how these templates are used in real-world projects.

In addition to technical insights, Aatisha encouraged students to focus on adaptability, problem-solving, and communication skills, which are just as critical for success in the field as technical expertise. Her session successfully bridged the gap between classroom learning and workplace expectations, leaving students with concrete takeaways and a clearer vision of potential career pathways in technology.

We were also pleased to have in attendance Undergraduate Programme Manager, Premalatha Sampath, along with members of her academic team, who joined the session to support students and engage with the discussion. Their presence highlighted the importance of academic-industry collaboration and the shared goal of preparing students for successful professional futures.

The event closed with a Q&A session, where students had the chance to ask questions directly related to their studies, career goals, and the realities of working as a software tester. The interactive discussion gave attendees not only expert insights but also encouragement to pursue their own professional journeys with confidence.

We extend our sincere thanks to Aatisha Gupta for her generosity in sharing her expertise, to our academic staff for their support, and to all students who participated enthusiastically. The ICL Future Tech – Talk Series continues to provide valuable opportunities for students to connect with industry professionals, gain exposure to current practices, and build the skills and knowledge required to thrive in today’s workplace.
