ICL Graduate Business School proudly launched the 2026 ICL Speakers Series with a compelling presentation by Garry Gupta, Director of Strategic Programmes, Strategic Engagement & Stakeholder Insights at the Ministry for Ethnic Communities.

Delivering his talk titled “Success Through Belonging: The Power of Inclusive Workplaces in New Zealand,” Garry shared strategic insights into the role of ethnic diversity in shaping New Zealand’s social cohesion and economic performance.

The Ministry for Ethnic Communities acts as the Government’s chief advisor on ethnic diversity and inclusion. During the session, students learned that ethnic communities now represent 22% of New Zealand’s population, with languages such as Punjabi, Tagalog, and Afrikaans among the fastest-growing in the country.

A significant highlight of the presentation was the economic contribution of ethnic communities. In 2023, ethnic businesses contributed $87 billion — approximately 22% of New Zealand’s GDP. Initiatives such as Ethnic Xchange, New Zealand’s premier ethnic business symposium series, were highlighted as platforms designed to harness the economic power of diversity.

Garry emphasised that diversity is no longer optional. As New Zealand’s workforce becomes increasingly multicultural, organisations must attract and retain talent from diverse backgrounds to remain globally competitive. He also discussed integration as a two-way process — requiring both employers and migrants to actively engage in building inclusive workplaces.

Particularly valuable for ICL’s international student cohort were the practical tools and strategies shared to better understand Kiwi workplace culture and convert multicultural experience into a career advantage.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where students avidly explored themes of belonging, leadership, and professional growth in Aotearoa.

ICL Graduate Business School extends its sincere appreciation to Garry Gupta for his time, professionalism, and meaningful contribution to our students’ academic and career development.
